I'm not sure how it all works fine if it doesn't work at all... As far as I can tell, you open a thickbox for links like xls and doc files, and the browser tries to save it. Or open it in its default application.
This is because saving or opening is the default action of the browser for that particular filetype. This is also the reason why your PDF link will not work.
