You're right, I think it's your earlier guess that we don't have all the world's fonts installed. I think it is best to assume that users have only a basic set of fonts, and not the entire set of Unicode glyphs. Windows has a font download option but I have turned it off. I don't see any point in installing Thai or Chinese since I can't read it anyway; the little rectangular boxes make just as much sense and take up less memory.
