Linux here.
My findings are not conclusive as I just made a quick check.
There might be some issue.
It doesn't happen for me on my new computer (Core2 Duo, 2GHz, FF
2.0.0.1, Firebug and couple of other plugins on a fresh install of
Gentoo).
It does spike up on my old computer though. But not as bad you
described. It goes for a 0.5-1s to 100%, while making the DOM elements
and creating the UI block. Then it drops down and stays idle until the
end. No jumpy mouse (jumpy mouse is for me usually an indication of
huge IDE traffic and there is of course nothing like this).
And it might be it also happens on my new comp, I just don't notice it...
On the other hand, on my old comp when browsing ajaxy sites I don't
notice such spikes.
