I did some research a few months back about uploading files using Ajax. What
I've found is that with IE you need an ActiveX object with special
permissions and in FX you need something else entirely. I didn't look into
other browsers but I'm under the impression there's nothing for those at
all. Aside from being completely different in IE and FX, it was convoluted
at best so I dropped it.

I'm guessing that in a couple of years it should be possible, as the Ajax
snowball gets big enough that the next generation of browsers support it
well.
