Synchronous means the function returns when all data is received. Meanwhile, the page is not interactive. The beauty of asynchronous (the first A of AJAX) is that the function returns right after the request and all interaction keeps working. As you understand, this has nothing to do with the difference between AJAX and navigating to another page.
