If it's the third column, you could also try this:

$('td:nth-child(3)').hide()

If you have <th>s in your table and need to hide them, too, you can do this:
$('td:nth-child(3), th:nth-child(3)').hide()

I dunno if that works, but it's the css way to address the 3rd column.
