Possibly you missed the following points: a) They say they are releasing the code for server side, both for use as a reference implementation of the protocol, and to allow anyone to set up their own server. b) The software and protocol is designed from the ground up with federation in mind - it's a key feature of the whole thing. Either that or I misunderstood them, but it sounded to me on the face of it that they "get it" at last.
