Weave originally just backed up its data over WebDAV and all the intelligence was in the client. I thought that was a pretty clever arrangement (for one) and it made it really easy to switch between servers. My understanding is that this has changed. But I haven't been following closely. I do think that the problem of self-hosting really is a problem. The best solution is providing standard platforms for running web applications. WebDAV, although very limited, is great in this regard because that type of hosting is already basically a commodity. I'd love to see similar sorts of hosting arrangements pursued for server software with a little more intelligence.
