Hi Everyone,

みなさん、こんにちは!

I’ve recently started a GitHub repo to attempt a group effort to translate the
Software Carpentry core lessons into Japanese. We’ve already started getting a
translation team together but if anyone wishes to get involved or contribute,
please get it touch or check out the repo:

Huge thanks to David Pérez-Suárez for setting this up. The guide for
translators is still a work in progress so please drop us an issue if it’s
difficult to set up.

See here for a demo of multi-lingual lesson:

Due to the language and culture barriers, we’re first focusing on making sure
learners would have access to lesson notes and then helpers/instructors in
their language if they don’t speak English very well. If you want to get
involved, don’t hesitate to contact us. It’s very early stages here but it
would be great to see some workshops in Japan eventually. There’s plenty of
interest in East Asia and an active group in South Korea so it would be great
to build a community here and exchange ideas. If you have any experience with
teaching in different countries or cultures, your advice is welcomed as well.

I’d like to revisit the idea of a local discussion channel specific to Japan,
as I’m reconsidering whether we’d make use of it. There’s been some interest in
such a channel to coordinate our activities here. I think Software Carpentry is
the appropriate place to host this so it’s open for others to get involved
rather than a separate Slack channel. Since this will likely be specific to
Japan (such as the translations) and some members will prefer to communicate in
Japanese, I think a “local-japan” group is more suitable but an Asia or Pacific
group could be useful in the future for the community aspect (such as calls for
helpers/instructors).

Thanks for your help! Any responses or contributions will be appreciated.

よろしくお願いいたします。

Kind Regards,

Tom Kelly
