Hi Andrea,

Monash University, Bioinformatics Platform and Data Fluency initiative. We have
drop-in sessions that are something like the "coding support" part of your
idea, with a focus on data analysis. It's a time when bioinformaticians and HPC
specialists are available to consult. Someone available for statistical
consulting is also good. It's good to have someone to greet people who turn up
and point them at someone who might be able to answer their question. We and
people who turn up also code away on our own projects during the sessions, and
often have a beer afterwards.

We've also had talks during these sessions, and also coding challenges and a
book club during this time (which have only been partial successes). People
will still turn up with data analysis problems, so it tends to split into a
group listening to the talk or taking part in the activity and other people
separately consulting about their problems. One interesting thing that has
worked quite well is to a set up a video conference just for people within the
room so that people can easily share their screen to the projector. This has
lead to some entertaining live coding with audience suggestions.

regards,
Paul Harrison
