Hi Nick, As Jonah laid out - it can work - but it takes some strategy and both human and cyber infrastructure (including bandwidth) to pull it off. We have not done it again - but we’re not against the notion.
Ours was successful (as measured in our assessment follow up), but did require a lot of (extra?) work. We had to insure the workshop could continue at both sites if the connection died. This necessitated instructors and helpers at both sites. (This is also a bonus as more people can participate and learn the delivery side of these events. Participants get a broader network to connect with). We mainly did it for two reasons. One of the instructors we wanted to come to our location couldn’t travel. And this then gave her the chance to offer the workshop at the AMNH, to folks we could not have paid to get them to Florida. So it was a way for us expand participation and engagement. Folks most definitely need training in how to do remote teaching - and how to facilitate the communication and participation across two sites. Another factor that simplified our event was that both sites were / are in the same time zone. Here’s how we advertised ours. https://www.idigbio.org/content/data-carpentry-workshop-idigbio and here’s the wiki resource we created https://www.idigbio.org/wiki/index.php/Data_Carpentry and the post-event blog where we discuss some of these issues https://www.idigbio.org/content/data-carpentry-please-can-we-have-some-more I think you’ll recognize some of the organizers. Feel free to send more questions. [noob question] I was wondering if carpentry workshops have ever been delivered concurrently at different sites using something like zoom? The idea being one instructor at each site delivering an episode live at that site, with the remote listening in and then swapping. Both sites would have an instructor and helpers. Has anyone tried this? I would love to hear your thoughts and learnings from such an experience. Thanks in advance. Nick.
