Dear all, At Carpentry Connect Manchester last month I proposed a new lesson on machine learning. I have done some preliminary work on this and create a basic lesson which I ran for a spring school earlier this year. At Carpentry Connect we had a discussion of additional material especially covering unsupervised learning, example datasets we can use and creating some personas for people who might come to this workshop.
The current version of the course is on github at https://github.com/machinelearningcarpentry/machine-learning-novice From the group at Carpentry Connect I think we have a few potential contributors/maintainers, but additional volunteers are welcome. Please email me or request to join the github project if you're interested. I've also made a #machine_learning channel on the Carpentries Slack. I'd eventually like to see this become an official lesson, but its always been a bit unclear to me how to officially launch a new lesson. From what was said at Carpentry Connect, my understanding is that the official way to launch a new lesson is through Carpentries Lab (https://github.com/carpentrieslab) and i've submitted an issue there about this. Related to this, I know there are lot of other unofficial lessons out there and some kind of index of these would be a great way to avoid duplicated effort and to encourage people to teach each other's courses. I've found some of these through the sharing-lessons etherpad (https://pad.carpentries.org/sharing-lessons). But I was never sure how official this page is and always struggled to find it again as I can't see any link from the main page or even the pad of pads. Would it be possible to get a more visible place for unofficial/contributed lessons?
