Agree, sounds like a previous effort to set $HOME had a syntax error that is now causing trouble. I think you might be able to get rid of it, and let the git-bash installer create the variable: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/32232978/change-the-location-of-the-directory-in-a-windows-install-of-git-bash
