Hi everyone, The Carpentries is currently calling for volunteers to join Maintainer Onboarding <https://carpentries.org/blog/2023/02/Apply-for-the-current-round-of-Carpentries-Maintainer-Onboarding/>.
Maintainers are responsible for the upkeep of official Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, and Software Carpentry lessons: handling issues and pull requests from community members to the open source repositories that lesson sites are built from. It is a flexible community role <https://docs.carpentries.org/topic_folders/maintainers/maintainers.html> and a great way to gain experience in managing an open source project in an established and supportive community. Furthermore, this year is a particularly great time to get involved with Carpentries lesson maintenance: our brand new lesson infrastructure <https://carpentries.org/blog/2023/02/dovetail-15/> is simplifying many of the tasks involved, and the Curriculum Team and Maintainer Community Lead are expanding our onboarding for new Maintainers. For the first time, it will include dedicated training on essential open source maintenance skills such as: reviewing pull requests; resolving merge conflicts; previewing websites on your local system; and rebasing forks and branches. This year we are looking for new Maintainers for some our most frequently-taught lessons, so this is a great way to have a big impact on the community. The deadline to apply for onboarding is approaching fast: fill out the form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1vqkjrEvic6TJwCAx918T-_x5zFMVwqaiDjI8HnK1wZk> before the end of your day on Wednesday (8th March)! If you would like to learn more about being a Maintainer in The Carpentries community, please feel free to reply here or contact me directly <mailto:[email protected]>.
