SSHFS would use passwords from /etc/shadow, while Samba has it's own
little database for passwords. While those passwords might be the same,
they don't have to be. 

If new Windows clients may not want to connecti trough old smb protocol,
they may also complain about weak ssh cihpers. Modern SSH clients need
additional options to connect to SSH on CentOS 6:

ssh ip.ip.ip.ip -l username -oKexAlgorithms=+diffie-helman-group1-sha1 -
oCiphers=+3des-cbc 

Old hosts are the most fun. (-:
