You see, wanboot only supports SPARC, and it forces us to carry around a very old (and insecure!) version of OpenSSL. "Modernizing" that code would be a real effort, with no gain to end-users, because nobody uses it.
These days, failure recover over a WAN is done using more modern BIOS' and IPMI. We don't see SPARCs deployed in isolation, or by "newbies" needing the kind remote support you envision. Indeed, deployment of a SPARC system running illumos is so difficult today that only "experts" (distribution builders mostly) have SPARC systems running illumos. I never foresee the day where we have SPARC systems deployed in the usage scenarios you envision.
