As a result of conversations I’ve had with individuals from underrepresented groups, I believe that it is important to have some specific behavioral guidelines in our community in order to ensure that we avoid offending anyone, and to have a more inclusive and inviting community.
I’ve talked about some of these concerns publicly in the recent past. Hence, as the “trademark owner” of the illumos trademark, I’m formally now asking anyone using the illumos mark to adopt an anti-harrassment policy at any event where the illumos mark is used. A good example was used by the recent OpenZFS Summit, which I’ve provided below for reference. I also am asking event organizers to *enforce* these policies actively. (Note that I think this means actively correcting offenders, and if an offender is unable or unwilling to adjust behavior to comply, then using strong forms of sanction, such as ejection from an event.) I recognize that for some of us, this may represent a difficult change in the way we talk about technology, etc. (Myself among them!) But the time is long since past that we eliminate metaphors that are offensive, sexual or otherwise, from our conversations surrounding illumos. If you intend to have an event and want to use the illumos mark, please contact me if you are not going to use the policy below, so that I can confirm that at least it is similar in spirit. Ultimately, I believe that an inclusive and inviting atmosphere is important to the illumos brand, and I will act to protect the brand here if I feel it is necessary. (Ultimately I’d far rather have an organization other than me own and protect the brand, but efforts to create such an organization have stalled in the past. So the buck falls to me for now.) I’d like to apply the same policy to moderation of the mailing lists and online fora as well. I recognize this will be harder, but if folks could please read the guidelines below, and make an honest effort at compliance, I think it will be helpful. I’m also available out-of-band for any further discussion should anyone have any concerns or questions about this. Thank you. - Garrett Harassment Policy OpenZFS Developer Summit is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion.
