I've seen contrary evidence to the conventional wisdom that Sun's compilers 
generate faster code.  Particularly on x86 architectures, I think GCC gets a 
lot of attention and I suspect that recent GCC generates pretty tight code.  
Historically we've seen situations where GCC performs better for some code, and 
Studio performs better for others.

I don't know that anyone has done a comprehensive comparison between the two 
using more recent builds.  

Note that I *do* believe that studio probably generates better code for SPARC 
-- if only because the Sun engineers have historically had more access to the 
h/w folks with a better understanding of the intricacies of the timing details, 
etc. for the SPARC cpus.
