I think we ultimately want to have a better solution at the sd layer
to detect and report (perhaps with a greylist) this information so
that end users don't have to muck with this so much. But that can
be done later.
Perhaps a drive finger-printing mechanism could be used in conjunction
with an Internet-based server (similar to how audio CDs are
automatically identified) so that the best parameters can be used
based on the drives involved? This would help avoid the problem that
information provided via installation media becomes stale.
