Hello, I have a ZFS storage based on our XStreamOS distro, running in production for 4 months, never had a problem. The system shares various filesystems, some NFS, some iScsi, some CIFS. The Windows PDC for CIFS resides inside a VMWare5 machine. This PDC, has also a disk mounted via a VMWare-iScsi resource on the storage itself. Today the disaster: - CIFS stopped responding - VMWare PDC could not be accessed not even via console, it just didn't let you enter the Administrator session. - VMWare iScsi resource did not respond from the Storage management. - The Storage machine did not let me get the bash prompt in any ssh session, not even on console (ssh auth was ok, but then I did not have any bash). I had no way to check the status of the storage, this way. - All NFS shares were up and running happily, mounted by a SunFire w/Solaris10. The only way I could solve: - Shutdown NFS clients (SunFire). - Kill the PDC VM via abrupt stop from vSphere. - Send a poweroff signal to the Storage via the poweroff button (never halting anyway). - Wait for all disks to be quiet, then force a poweroff by keeping the button pressed for a while. After reboot, everything was normal again. There is a kind of loop in this situation, but I suspect that all the problem started with the iScsi not responding from the storage: - the PDC did not let me in because it was angry with the missing disk from VMWare-iScsci. If this is the case, is it normal that a Windows server give me no way to enter when a disk is not responding?? Or should I just think that the PDC was freezing by itself (but in this case, I shouldn't see iscsi time out on vmware). - the CIFS was not responding because the PDC was timing out I don't understand why the storage was not giving me the bash, though! And, I could not find any trace of errors, logs or whatsoever about iscsi problems. Any idea where I should look to find traces of what happened? Gabriele.
