RIght… the dangers that Dan referred to involve the use of expanders. Direct
attach SATA drives are always fine. However, I would *never* use SATA disks in
a case where a shared backplane, or expander, or port multiplier, are in use.
That way lies pain and suffering, and fear. And that leads to the dark … well,
more pain and suffering. :-)
Seriously, SATA drives are appropriate for direct connect, and totally wrong in
a more complex situation. If you've got expanders, spring for the SAS drives.
As others have pointed out already, the cost difference between SAS and SATA is
nominal, unless you're *really* trying to cut corners by using the el-cheapo
consumer grade drives. And if you're doing that, consider yourself forewarned
that you're building a system that is almost *doomed* to failure right from the
get go.
