I'm rephrasing;
What ready-made Illumos-based solutions, preferably tunrkey, are there
that attempt to address the following needs;
1. A medium sized file server; Like 50 TB or less.
2. A very large file server setup; up to 1000 TB or more. Possibly
multiple servers in parallell on multiple disk units. Or just a bunch of
cooperating smaller servers.
3. A mail server serving iMap and all the others, and running postfix or
similar. No user login, but some user self-admin for vacations,
forwarding, password change. Must run greylisting and antivirus. Must be
admin manageable by a group of half-wits under occasional guidance by
the resident genius.
4. A web site hosting server. a few hundred or so sites, space served by
something like spec'ed in 1. above.
5. GUI remote access virtual machines, like a hundred or so.
6. Notebook for desktop stuff. Spec the notebook, too, please! Good
enough to run several virtual machines with several different OSes.
Great graphics for modelling and desktop stuff.
If you'd care to suggest non-illumos for any of the above, for
comparison or as actual advice, don't hesitate.
Re Andrew;
Of course.
BUT, I wanted to know what people on this list thought would be the
best, thus getting a list of possible things.
A file server in the 1000 TB range would probably be a set of disk
boxes, FC or iSCSI or something, being parallell accessed by multiple
servers. The question of "best Illumos OS" remains.

Everyone's going to have an opinion. I suspect most opinions may be in
sync on answers for 4, 5, and 6, but I bet you'll get an argument on
1, and possibly on 3.
You'll notice I didn't mention 2, because that one I can give you an
answer. None. Don't do it. Scale out, not up. If you're putting more
than probably 180 or so hard disks into a single system, you probably
need to re-evaluate what you're doing. There may be rare exceptions,
such as deep archival/cold storage, but even then, I question the
necessity of sticking it all in one system instead of spreading it
out. At that size, the cost delta of spreading it out (in the form of
the additional server[s]) is often fractions of a penny per GB, with
all sorts of payback (lowered failure domains, significantly improved
performance, an overall ease of administration despite increasing the
number of OS' to manage, the list is endless).

?????
I know the answer will depend on other things, so there may be
several answers dependent on other restrictions or desires.
For each case I am very interested in turnkey ready complete
appliances based on Illumos. Even if you are not sure they are
actually the best. Ready made has the sweet taste of being already
set up.
