I got exactly the same errors, either as an SMF service or at boot as
an rc script. Same thing - if I run it by hand once logged in under
the same environment, it works fine.

If I comment out the call to pam_setcred in src/session-child.c
(there's also a pam_set_item there that looks troublesome) then
it works. I don't understand either PAM or LightDM well enough to
understand what it's actually trying to do or whether removing the
broken call is the right solution.
