So what is the relative maturity and support of DilOS these days?
I really like it.
Do we have Xen?
Yes, in DilOS.
Do we have LX zones?
Yes, in SmartOS.
Do we have desktop?
Yes, in OI.
What a hell??? Can we create a single universal distribution???? Too
much fragmentation for such a small community.
Sorry, guys, these are emotions, but I suppose everyone agree that we
lack place to ship not-100% ready work. So, distributions support their
own gates, just to avoid integration costs. But If we don't ship
something in 90%-ready state, it can be never finished. If we ship it in
illumos-gate as is, we a) can break existing products, which expect gate
to be 100%-stable,
b) we sometimes just can't do it because of lack of reviewers.
What can we do with it? Can we create current branch? So that not-100%
ready work, but rather useful, can be shipped there? If something goes
wrong, you can always just revert last commit... Can we make review
process for this branch a bit less strict? For example, if Toomas does
something with loader or Dan does something to network stack, I'm 90%
sure they do correct thing. If they don't, they fix it (or you can just
revert something...).
We (OI) could ship separate repository with pre-built packages from this
branch with 'red mark' on the repository 'use it on your own risk'...
Eventually, after testing in current, work could be MFC'ed....
