I have just ordered my proposed next gen ZFS/AiO system based on
- SuperMicro X11SPH-nCTPF with enough PCI-e lanes
to build quite large ZFS Raid-Zn pools with U.2 NVMes
- Intel Optane 900P U.2 - more affordable than the P4800X
These new generation of NVMe are more adressed like RAM
not like traditional Flash what makes trim or garbage collection
obsolete.
seehttps://www.pcper.com/reviews/Storage/Intel-Optane-SSD-900P-480GB-and-280GB-NVMe-HHHL-SSD-Review-Lots-3D-XPoint
Compared to one of the best current NVMe's for ZIL or storage usage,
the Intel P3700
it halves the latency from 20us to 10 us with random write iops goes
up from around
80k to 500k with best values even with qd=1. This will make a raid-z
pool from such devices
without an extra Slog using ZIL the ultimate affordable high
performance solution.
Remains the hot-plug question.
While there is currently no widely available U.2 backplane I will start
with
mobile U.2 racks like Icy Dock MB601VK-B
I would not expect that the current Illumos NVMe driver supports hotplug

*What is the state of NVMe U.2 hotplug capability in Illumos ?*
