I think you are right. Lenovo T60 has 4 GB ram but only 3 GB can be
used for ram.

This sounds very much like you are running out of memory. Please note
that VirtualBox uses all memory assigned to the guest immediatly.

Actually, I had wrongly mentioned the Extension Pack. What you need
are the guest additions:

Please do see if you can install these and whether performance
improves.
As for the comparison between the two different computer models,
please compare the CPU, disk, RAM, and virtual memory.
