Doesn't the same thing also apply to Xorg/XLibre? The modern graphics stack is
complex. We need DRM drivers in the kernel, not just the xf86-video-intel driver
like in the past.
While Kernel DRM/KMS drivers are preferred, Xorg still supports the old
user-space drivers and they're mostly what are used on illumos & Solaris.
(There is a project to port a few of the needed drivers from the Linux kernel
to illumos, but it's not integrated to the main illumos-gate, and I didn't
think that many people were using it.)
The Nvidia proprietary driver is an exception, and is the most commonly used
kernel graphics driver on illumos & Solaris.
