I've had success using the hardware power symbol on a button (a circle,
broken at the top, with a vertical bar - there's probably one on your
monitor). If the power is on, the button is lit green, the other controls it
affects are enabled. If the power is off, the power button is displayed
unlit and the other controls it affects are grayed and disabled. On a mobile
client used in bright light I also needed to display a gray power icon next
to powered down communications channels since the lighting effects could
sometimes wash out.

The power symbol is well enough understood that it can be small and tucked
out of the way.
