That sounds like a good solution, except I don't think you need to go
for an iframe, this could be done with a single document and divs.

Also, if your engineers/devs are telling you there's not enough time
to implement an ajax-ish solution either they're too slow or something
is wrong with the time estimate for the project.. ajax is not
complicated to implement.. especially if you use one of the great
javascript libraries out there mootools is my pick, but there's also
prototype, jquery, dojo, yui, and more.
