Here are a few other types of controls that may offer interesting
challenges. I've run into these issues when getting the Flash
designers here to standardize on one and !!!DANGIT!!! ONLY ONE set of
UI behaviors for multimedia controls.

        Sound On/Off
        Media Play/Pause

Should you show current state, or show the action that will occur
when the control is pressed?

The Flashies here were in the habit of showing the current state,
which kinda sorta makes sense when you're talking about situations
where the current state may not be obvious.

I successfully argued that current state is obvious in a user-
controlled media player, and if the user wants to change state, they
will be looking for the correct tool to accomplish that task. Ergo,
show the Next Action.

(In cases where this logic didn't work, I took screenshots of the
control states of all the major non-Flash media players, printed them
on individual sheets of heavy tabloid paper, and starting whacking
the perp around the head and shoulders until they gave up.)

We're now using speaker-cone icons that either show/don't show sound
waves emanating from the cone, or a speaker cone and sound wave icon
with or without a diagonal bar over it. (Before anyone brings up the
point that the state of sound _volume_ might not be obvious, I've
been fighting for combined volume indicators and controls. )

Regarding play/pause, we use the relatively standard symbols used
since the days of the original Walkman. Double vertical bars (meaning
Pause) are displayed when the media is playing, while a right arrow
(meaning Play) is shown when not playing.
