It may be a little confusing in the SW dev world since "functional"  
is also a style of software development (you can say "functional  
programming" in the same way you can say "object oriented programming").

It also has a slightly lesser known meaning in software development  
as a design methodology <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_design>
