Sr. Interaction Designer

POSITION TYPE
Senior Level

DESCRIPTION

Innovation: Whether that innovation is called the first scroll wheel in a
mouse, or the first off desktop backlit rechargeable media keyboard, the
principle is the same: think something that nobody has thought before, or
improve something that already exists. A lot of people use the word. We make it
happen. Join Microsoft Hardware as an interaction designer and help us redefine
innovation in desktop products and their enabling technologies.

The Microsoft Hardware Interaction Design team is looking for a design leader,
someone who can invent, drive and inspire great design solutions. We want a
designer that has the vision, experience, and passion to impact our already
successful line of desktop and notebook productivity products. We need a
designer who will relish solving tough design challenges, and who are
passionate about creating innovative product experiences through hardware and
software integration. You need to love software; you need to love hardware, and
most of all you need to a have a passion for great design.

In the UX organization you'll be inventing new user experiences, helping define
the design vision for the product and technology platforms, and working with
the product team to make the vision real. You will design and drive the
development of fundamentals around a well-defined nucleus of user needs, tasks,
and business goals.

You'll design for a wide range of user behaviors and interaction models for
both near and long term products -- so you will need to think strategically, be
creative and be able to innovate ways to communicate and visualize user
experiences. You'll develop prototypes for diverse projects including mice,
keyboards, remote controls and other peripherals involving innovative hardware
and software user interactions -- so you'll need to have command of a wide
range of prototyping methods (paper, wireframes, interactive, hardware) and be
able to communicate your ideas quickly and interactively. Over time, you'll be
working with a variety of emerging technologies such as touch, speech, and
gesture - so you will need to have a passion for technology. You'll work
closely with industrial designers, user researchers, marketing, software
development and hardware engineering professionals in a highly collaborative
environment -- so you'll need to be detail-oriented and results-driven. Most
importantly, you'll need to be passionate about our customers - consumers who
want great user experiences.

Additional qualifications:
At least 3-5 years of experience in the industry designing for consumer
hardware and software products. A strong portfolio demonstrating breadth and
creativity in successful product design as well as versatility with design and
prototyping tools.

Solid knowledge of the field of human-computer interaction, interaction design,
affordance design, interface design and visual design is required. Strong
interest in and aptitude for learning new technologies is a must. Additional,
hands-on experience in a secondary field such as industrial design, software
engineering, etc. is highly desired. Strong written and oral communication
skills are required.

Education requirements include either an MA/MS in interaction design,
industrial design or highly related field, OR a BA/BS in one of the above
fields with significant industry experience.

Join our team and play a critical role in helping us achieve our long range
vision of integrated hardware/software solutions driven by meaningful user
experiences.
