It has basic content management and workflow capabilities, but the
product is designed as a portal server, not as a enterprise cms.

I think for small web sites, especially in intranet context, it makes
perfectly sens to use sharepoint server, but for large web sites a
"real" cms (Vignette, Typo3, System7 ...) is better suited. Those
solutions do not include all the people integration / single sign on
functionality for enterprise portals which is unnecessary for online
media.
