One of my previous projects dealt with design for  an in house built CMS
app. The company had reviewed many CMS solutions, and came to the conclusion
that it was easier/better/cheaper to develop one from scratch.

I was pretty sceptical with the "Build VS Buy" approach as CMS apps can be
very feature rich and it seemed someone would've designed a generic one,
which at least would be a good base. In the end the in house team built a
descent CMS which covered requirements exactly.

Not sure this helps you as you're already down the "Bought" path, but it
turned out that building a fairly robust CMS solution, although "bigger then
a bread box" was a doable initiative for a small to mid sized co.
