Callie,
DC has a rich and active design community. You can sign up to DC-IA
(www.dc-ia.com), an informal announce-only mailing list for events and
jobs in the DC/Baltimore area. UPA's DC chapter is also extremely
active and puts on regular events.

There's plenty of work in Washington, and it's ideally located for
gigs all up and down the East Coast. You can even avoid the government
sector, if that's not your cup of tea. (I've had some of that tea, and
I'm happy to have switched to coffee, if you know what I mean.)

You'll be well-situated to attend Interaction08, about a day's drive
from the DC area and there are a handful of direct flights to Savannah
from Dulles Airport.
