I started using the gmail local client http://mailplaneapp.com/ after the gmail upgrade which caused FF to crash as well as some of the other bugs.
Mailplane, which is webkit I think, does not seem to have the same js 'enhancements' so you see the old address book, etc. Killer feature of the client is the offline mode.
