The way I see it, microblogging is to weblogging what IM is to email. It's just a different, faster, and more disposable form of self- publishing. I'm on Twitter and it's an awesome way for me to still feel connected in some way to friends that live in different cities. It's also great for when you're at a conference to let people know what you're currently up to or where you're at.
