Same here, Dave. At the risk of showing my age, there weren't any higher ed.
schools in the western US offering anything remotely close to this field when I
started working.

About 10 years ago, I met a San Jose State U student who said he was in a ui
design masters program. I thought this was a rare step in the right direction.
When I mentioned I was considering auditing one of their classes he said I was
better qualified to teach the courses than the instructors. That kinda squashed
my enthusiasm to investigate returning to a classroom environment. I wanted to
take classes where I could learn new stuff.

Now it seems rather common to find universities and colleges offering programs
in UI/UE, etc. Not trying to sound egotistical, but I can't imagine they'd be
able to teach me what I'd want to learn at this point in my career.

Add to that, most software companies in silicon valley don't seem as interested
in degrees as they are in practical experience and demonstrated skills.

So I'm left to ponder what benefit could I really gain from getting a Masters
or PhD.
