Higher and listen to people that are darn good at something - for instance - a long time ago, I hired a friend with a degree in graphic design. We were doing Shockwave for CD interact(ive) work for Toyota.
He taught me more about typography than any book ever could - and I listened everytime he spoke about Why he choose to use What he choose. I have learned an amazing amount from people who worked for me.
