I prefer books or articles that act as research themselves over those
which describe research methods. I like to connect the dots myself. To
that end, here's one of the most amazing graphic design and
communication art history books you'll find. It shows the progression
of Art Nouveau and early twentieth century commercial art to The
Bauhaus movement and the new formalism to the more current state of
modern graphic design as it evolved towards the 1950s and 1960s. And
the essays from Alan Fern are top notch.
