We adapt to brightness and are sensitive to contrast. Adaption is a complicated subject, not perfectly understood. See if you can recast the question in terms of contrast sensitivity. Brian Wandell's textbook "Foundations of Vision" is a good starting point and you can follow up with its bibliography.
