Sebi, I agree (if I understand your point) that the 2 approaches are not exclusive, but rather together can provide great value to one another.
I believe though for myself that in N. America we need to do more to bring out the "design discipline" side. I've actually been germinating an article in my head with the title, "Silicon Valley is killing Interaction Design". I think this b/c I think that the engineering and rational focus of SV IxD pushes down the more aesthetic and emotional sides of IxD practice here in North America. I'm not saying that this phenomena is ONLY in SV, but SV has such a critical mass of IxD practice in N. America that its influence is huge. To the point that IxD on the east coast which one would think would be more aesthetic due to its influences of media and advertising, really isn't. Most organizations still separate "design" from "user experience" (yes there are exceptions) where "user experience" is where IxD roles (usually as info arch titles) are done. Now a lot of this is also b/c "creatives" in these two old communities take on a whole other polemic, but also because of how we train and discuss IxD here in the US is really based on the experiences from SV. Like I said, it is just a hypothesis for now, but to me this is why an Masters of Fine Arts in IxD is so interesting to me. It goes in the face of this trend which to me is just what the doctor ordered. That being said, a good IxD program that didn't also cover standard HCI courses like cognitve and social psyche and basic HCI research technologies would be pretty sub-standard to me as much as a program that didn't have dedicated studio courses. -- dave On Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 7:09 AM, Sebi Tauciuc <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > 2 converging divergent approaches, I would say - at least that's one point I > think the article is trying to make. > > Sebi > > On Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 3:25 AM, David Malouf <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> >> Check out what I think is a very articulate article on 2 divergent >> approaches to IxD. >> >> http://tinyurl.com/5mnmln >> >> -- >> David Malouf >> http://synapticburn.com/ >> http://ixda.org/ >> http://motorola.com/ >> ________________________________________________________________ >> Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! >> To post to this list .......
