Hi Jack, I've got the Jacobson book and it's an important reference, but I think it'd be more appropriate for your Masters-level class. It's been a while since I've read it but it's comprised mostly of scholarly essays. I've taught senior-level graphic design students and, browsing through the book again tonight, it doesn't strike me as the kind of thing that would go over at all.
You might take a look at Wurman's Information Anxiety 2.
