Just posted a blog post on sketching myself just last night. In it I'm trying to distinguish between "sketching" and "drawing" and talk about "sketching" specifically as a design tool.
But to me the importance of "lead/ink to paper/wall" is less important than the intentionality. Not everyone has equal craft skills when it comes to this mode of working. What is most important is taking the time or adding to your existing process the non-linear multiplicity of ideas--the real separation of creation from judgment.
