Beautiful! I for one am really looking forward to the day when there are entries for conglomerate interfaces like the ones which control commercial or residential automation. (IE Crestron or AMX) These touchpanels control a dizzying array of systems. The scope of interaction on this one device ranges from the Big Picture 'macro' of controlling things like lighting, Heating/Air conditioning, security etc for the entire home / office, down to the 'micro' interactions of controlling an MP3 player, a DVD library (or setting an alarm clock for the bedroom).
To be honest, most of the interfaces like this that are installed out there are terrible. No offence intended to who installed them, but time and time again I hear of people who have spent over a million dollars to have one of these state-of-the-art systems installed in their residence, only to find that they only use about 20% of the system because they "just can't figure it out". That's certainly no strike against the user. Most of the time these interfaces have been designed by the system engineer who lives in the world of speaker cable, decibels, amperages, throw distances, matrix switchers and HDMI connectors. It all makes perfect sense to them. I've also seen some pretty stunning examples of how to take a ridiculously complicated system and present it as though it was as simple a thing to use as a lightswitch. These types of conglomerate interfaces are going to catch up. They'll slowly start to realize and understand what's been happening over in the computer world for the last 30 years, but it would be nice to put a bit of a fire under the chair of the companies responsible for designing these things and have awards available. Anybody have suggestions on how to inspire new categories with the IDEA people?
