@Bob, academia is something that wont make or break you in IxD. Like others have mentioned, it's about what you know and what you can show. Definitely get that portfolio together, use your background, and create some user centered designs. If you need a resource for some quick software training, check out Lynda.com.
@Mark, freelance work is a great way to build a visible portfolio. It is also a way to develop skills.
