Hello fellow Chicagoans,

Please join us on Wednesday, Sep 10th for our next Chicago IxDA gathering!

Polly Greathouse will be presenting a talk on remote research titled
Cultural Probes. Here is a summary below:

Remote research techniques to empower people to share what really matters,
just in time

When we need to understand real-time, deeply personal experiences observing
from a distance adds value to research. Businesses, design planners and
product designers hunger for revelations about what people really do and why
they do it. By taking the researcher out of the experience, remote personal
dialog is less constrained. Hopes, fears and dreams emerge in relation to
the context we weave into the research kits.

This presentation will offer examples of remote research Cultural Probes
used in commercial and academic projects. We will show how insights gathered
by subjects on their own time with provocative and targeted stimuli generate
profoundly rich and grounded design criteria. Background on the technique
will show how playful artifacts, tangential questioning, journaling and
rituals circumvent obvious responses and reveal deeper channels for
conversation in follow-up interviews and analysis.
