Sitemaps don't need to live on separate pages and they don't just serve lost users.
Sitemaps can live comfortably at the foot of the page [1],[2],[3],[4] and are particularly powerful from an SEO perspective [5]. It's there when you need it, and it's out of the way when you don't.
