Hi all - great discussion. I've designed a one-column presentation - in an application and am currently designing a two-column screen in an application. The decision to go with one-column was based on the mental model the users had of their paper form - where they simply moved down the page to fill in more data. The decision to go with two-columns was to increase information density/reduce information hunting as Oleh mentioned earlier. Testing will be done next year - I'll keep you posted on results.
