Greetings! We are accepting registrations for the Fourth Annual World Usability Day New England conference, to be held on November 13, 2008 at Landmark College. We are pleased to announce the program line-up, including:
Keynote: Ambient Findability Peter Morville, Information Architect, Semantic Studios Author of the O'Reilly 'Polar Bear' book, Peter Morville is widely recognized as a father of the information architecture field, and he serves as a passionate advocate for the critical roles that search and findability play in defining the user experience. Morville will explore how information literacy, information architecture, and usability are all critical components in a world that is ever more searchable. This keynote will examine information-seeking, social networking behaviors, and the growing connectedness of information (and objects). He will offer forward-looking descriptions of ubiquity and inspire thinking about how we can improve the resources we create in the world of teaching and learning. You can view a talk Morville gave to Google employees on the future of search at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8085529791307393357 - Usability & Technology to Promote Learning for All Students Steve Fadden, Landmark College, Putney VT Landmark College's Steve Fadden will discuss the anxiety and confusion caused by the confluence of changes in today's educational and workforce environments, and will consider the following questions: How do we develop education to promote access and learning for students across a continuum of cognitive abilities and cultural backgrounds? What is the role that technology and design should play in meeting the needs of students who struggle in conventional academic environments? How can educators be effective role models when many are challenged to simply keep up with students, who seem to bring new gadgets and interaction styles to class each new semester? The session will conclude with a discussion of a profile-based method for designing educational activities, with an overview of promising uses of technologies and methods to promote education for a wide array of diverse learners. Fadden holds a PhD in in Engineering Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with research interests in human performance and decision-making as it relates to interface design, complex system performance, usability, and training for specialists with diverse learning needs. Steve has advised students and taught courses in psychology, engineering, and human-computer interaction at the University of Illinois, Brigham Young University, George Mason University, and Marlboro College Graduate Center. - Trends in Assistive Technology & Game Design for Education Clayton Lewis, PhD, University of Boulder, Colorado. Clayton Lewis is Professor of Computer Science, Fellow of the Institute of Cognitive Science, and Scientist in Residence at the Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he has been based since 1984. He is well known for his research on evaluation methods in user interface design. Lewis' talk will examine two developments in mainstream technology that have important potential for increased access to improved assistive technology. Increasingly, smart phones are becoming open to independent software developers, including students. The Raising the Floor initiative, spearheaded by Gregg Vanderheiden of the University of Wisconsin, aims to build basic assistive technology into the public information infrastructure, increasing the accessibility of applications delivered via the Web. - Student Panel Students from Landmark & Dartmouth Colleges will share their experiences as beneficiaries of universal usability. The student panel has consistently been the highest rated session each year. Don't miss it! During lunch, we will have a tour and demos in our Universal Design & Usability Lab. The day will close with a roundtable discussion on Universal Usability for Teaching and Learning, led by Sarah Horton, conference co-chair and Director of Web Strategy, Design & Infrastructure at Dartmouth College. Register online at www.landmark.edu/wud. Conference registration is $80, and you can pay online or by check.
